At 9 am, May 28, 2020, the thesis defense of the 2020 undergraduates of Mechanical Engineering College of Southwest Jiaotong University was conducted in the Tencent conference. In order to further implement the response requirements of the Ministry of Education and the Education Department of Sichuan Province to coVID-19 epidemic prevention and control, according to the notice of the school, the defense was conducted online by students and reviewed by the professors. Party secretary Da-Wei Dong, President of the college Lin-Mao Qian participate in all the way, the quality assurance committee director Wen-ming Cheng, Yang Meichuan served as deputy director of the defense. The vice President Huai-Wen Tian, Guo-Fu Ding, Qin Ping, Bin Zhou, Chun-Jun Chen, and ten students participate in the defense.
Before the defense, the faculties gather in the 2206 conference room of Jiuli campus for the working meeting of defense committee members. Huai-Wen Tian first gave an opening speech, expressing his gratitude to all the faculties who participated in the school's thesis defense and assigning this defense. He emphasized that the significance of this defense activity is to test the students' learning results in the four years of university. He hoped that all the judges could discover and propose the shortcomings of students' papers and urging them to correct them. Da-Wei Dong mentioned that the college's thesis defense is a demonstration of the college's general defense work. He hoped that the defense judges could be fair and impartial and actively demonstrate the good style of teachers of Jiaotong University. Subsequently, Lin-Mao Qian put forward some requirements for graduation design and final examination, reminding the instructor to actively ensure the quality of graduation design under the special situation of the epidemic situation. The quality can be supplemented by adjusting the content layout, perfecting the details of the thesis, etc., and the graduation design should reflect the professional level of Shuanwan College. In view of the examination work of non-graduation courses, Lin-Mao Qian suggested that the teaching and research departments of all departments should carry out targeted review during holidays to help students consolidate and improve their knowledge, so as to successfully complete the examination work of this semester.
At 9:30 am, the thesis defense officially began, and the judges were divided into two groups in the classrooms of 2206 and 2217. This defense is divided into two parts, the student defense time is 20 minutes, the judge questions for 10 minutes. Through screen sharing, the students present their graduation design to the teachers and introduce the subject direction, goals, summary and verification, future prospect and other contents, so as to fully show the judges their learning achievements in the four years of university. After the defense of each student, the judges will read out the opinions of the reviewers, put forward some questions and suggestions on the content of the paper, remind the students to pay attention to the format of the paper, pay attention to the rationality of the model, use real experimental data and indicate the sources of the paper.
At 12:30 p.m., the thesis defense was successfully completed. To reduce the regret brought by the online defense, the college organized judges and students of the defense to take a group photo online, which brought a full sense of ceremony for the students of the defense, and also a successful full stop for the four-year university.
