RESEARCH

Current Research

Professor Zhongrong Zhou’s main research interests are in biotribology, fretting wear and fretting fatigue, and rail/wheel contact. His research includes anti-wear formation mechanisms of both human and animal teeth, saliva adsorption and lubrication, soft tissue tribology and skin perception, tribological behaviors of restorative biomaterials, tribological phenomena in the mixed fretting regime, composite fretting modes, wear and crack competition mechanisms, palliative measures such as solid lubrication against surface wear and fatigue, experimental and theoretical analyses of rail corrugation and wear, friction-induced-noise, industrial applications of tribological designs for failure prevention.

He has published more than 180 refereed papers in various international journals and 4 books, including Dental Biotribology published by Springer. He has been a most cited Chinese researcher in the field of Mechanical Engineering for recent years (Data from Elsevier). He has made more than 30 keynote and invited lectures at national and international conferences, and 26 China invention patents. His research has been funded by national agencies, such as NSCF, MTC, ME, and several Chinese industries, as well as international foundations. He is active in the Chinese Society of Mechanical Engineers (CSME) and other international societies or conferences related to tribology. He was the Chair of the 12th Chinese Tribology Congress in 2015, Chair of the 6th International Symposium on Fretting Fatigue in 2010, Co-chair of the 7th International Conference on Surface Engineering in 2016, and chair of several other international forums or workshops. He is an Editor-in-Chief of Biosurface and Biotribology, an Associate Editor of Chinese Journal of Tribology, and the Editorial Board of some other international journals.
